Cabinets of Curiosity

One of the things that has stuck in my head after the lecture for this assignment is 'Cabinets of Curiosity'.

I've been search the internet, seeing what comes up and came across this blog

not sure how clear this page from my sketchbook is, but I've been thinking about interactive cabinet's of curiosity, ones that the viewer can choose what to put in. Using an OHP the viewer can select slides and arrange them so they look like they are in a cabinet.

  1. The cabinet in the picture can't have ever existed, the hinges on the outer doors are placed wrong and if you were to close those doors they would hang in front of the cabinet with a gap between the door and the cabinet front, not inside the face frame like they are designed to. Although I guess maybe it's artistic licence as you wouldn't have seen the hinges if it was painted properly... and they are nice hinges :-)

  3. I'm already filling the cabinet in my mind... it's old hand tools at the moment, there's 4 in there... 2 wooden planes, a saw set and something that I never worked out what it was..... I think a few mechanical curios to ... everything has to be older than me to qualify :-)

  4. sounds cool! I'm thinking of making two, I already have an old bathroom cabinet that I've had for 20 years just waiting for a use (apart form being a bathroom cabinet) that one will be for me.
The other I'm going to make form my old flightcase type tool box and that one will be filled with things that represent my Dad, he can help me with installing some lights.

  5. I like the one in the photo as it has two sets of doors, it's kind of a voyage of discovery then.
The outer solid doors when closed intrigue you enough that you must know whats inside. Once you have been tempted to open them you are drawn inside yet still seperated from your goal by the glass ones..... but you know the naughty schoolkid in you is gonna be so tempted to explore further and open those doors too, and as you have already touched and opened the outer doors the taboo of physical contact has already been breached.... whereas if it just had glass doors people would just take a quick glance and maybe move on..... also people would be tempted everytime they see the cabinet to investigate wether the contents have changed :o).....or am I just terminally curious?

  8. Lol :-) Guess I did get a bit carried away ... Still like the idea ... gonna make one when I get the chance :-) Working out where to put it will take a lot of thought, and negotiation! Want it to be somewhere with reasonable foot traffic or it won't get looked at... oh and what wood am I gonna use... hmmm recycled boards... It has to look old :-)

I look forward to your post on the contents of your cabinet :-)

  9. Wonder if I can get some old glass for it? Would be so cool to have non float glass, a bit of distortion would be perfect!
